Quem fundou o escotismo foi o inglês chamado Robert Stephenson Smith Baden-Powell.Quando jovem, gostava da vida ao ar livre, de sair de barco com seus irmãos, acampar, fazer fogueiras para cozinhar sua comida e viver aventuras junto à natureza.
Logo após terminar seus estudos secundários, Baden-Powell ingressou no exército. Durante sua carreira militar, viajou por boa parte do mundo. Conheceu e conviveu com muitas tribos indígenas, colonos etc.
Na Guerra do Transvall, em 1899, B.P. (como o chamamos carinhosamente), organizou a guarnição de Mafeking, uma pequena cidade estratégica na África do Sul. A cidade foi atacada durante meses, mas B.P. resistiu graças a sua coragem e astúcia, mesmo dispondo de uma tropa muito inferior a do inimigo. Como B.P. dispunha de poucos soldados, treinou todo homem capaz de lutar. Para as tarefas auxiliares, de grande importância, como mensagens, correio, cozinha, primeiros socorros, sinaleiros etc., organizou um grupo de jovens.
Estes rapazes desempenharam suas tarefas com grande eficácia, dedicação e lealdade, causando grande impressão em B.P.
Quando a guerra acabou, B.P. tornou-se herói em sua Pátria. Durante uma viagem ao seu país, Baden-Powell viu algumas crianças usarem, em suas brincadeiras, um livro que ele havia escrito para o exército. Este livro continha técnicas de acampamento e sobrevivência em regiões selvagens. Entusiasmado como o que tinha visto, resolveu organizar o primeiro acampamento escoteiro para 20 jovens, em 1907, na Ilha de Brownsea – Inglaterra. Esses 20 jovens, que formavam as Patrulhas Lobo, Touro, Corvo e Maçarico, aprenderam coisas como: técnicas mateiras, observação, fraternidade etc.
Em 1908, devido ao sucesso desse acampamento, B.P. resolveu escrever o livro Escotismo para Rapazes e fundar o movimento escoteiro.
Depois de uma vida dedicada ao escotismo, B.P. faleceu em sua casa no Quênia, no dia 8 de janeiro de 1941, com 84 anos.Hoje, milhões de jovens como você fazem parte do Movimento Escoteiro e estão Sempre Alerta para fazer um mundo melhor para si e para seu próximo.
